City preps for royal visit

The countdown is for the Queen’s visit to Winnipeg as part of her nine-day tour across Canada.

Staff at High Tea Bakery have been busy baking hundreds of cookies since Monday.

"We are making three thousand handmade, hand rolled, Imperial cookies for the Queen's visit," said owner Belinda Bigold.

Belinda's treats will be served at the garden walkabout at the Lieutenant’s residence Saturday afternoon.

She's confident her majesty won't be dissapointed.

"I'm not serving month-old cookies to the queen, they have to be made fresh and we make everything from scratch," said Bigold.

Let's hope the Queen also likes chocolate. Constance Menzies owner of Chocolatier Constance Popp says her shop has been chosen to make over 100 chocolate truffles that will be served for dessert at the Queen's lunchean on Saturday.

"I just felt very special that we got to do this," Menzies said. "Not just because we making them for the lunch but I also get to make a very special box of chocolates for her personally," she said.

Speaking of lunch, that’s staying top secret. But officials say it’s a meal fit for a queen.

“It’s a two-course meal because we had time limits placed on us, we only have time for a two course meal,” said Phyllis Fraser, Chief of Staff for the lieutenant Governor of Manitoba.

“It’s a Manitoba made lunch,” said Fraser.

Rehearsals and preparations have been going on for weeks at Government House, where the queen will spend most of her day.

Emma Williams, 15, will also be there. She’s one of five girl guides that will be serving cookies at the Queen's walkabout.

"I'm super excited about that cause I only thought I'd see her on T.V never in real life," Williams said.
