An 11-year-old Langley boy struck by a pickup truck in Aldergrove Friday afternoon is in stable condition in hospital after suffering grave injuries.
The boy, on his way home from school, was struck just prior to 3 p.m. in the 27000 block of 29 Avenue as he and another boy — who crossed unharmed — dashed across the roadway without using a crosswalk.
Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks said when police arrived the injured child was unconscious but breathing.
“His injuries are quite significant,” said Cpl. Marks. “He has head injuries and my understanding is some broken bones as well.”
The boy was airlifted from the scene.
“Any head injury for a child is an automatic airlift,” explained Cpl. Marks. “The last update I have is that he’s actually stable and I would anticipate there will probably be some surgeries involved — but my understanding is that he was doing better.”
The female driver of the pickup remained at the scene and police do not believe speed and alcohol were factors.
There were several witnesses to the accident and Langley Client Support and Victim Services have been dispatched to support anyone who was traumatized from the incident, Cpl. Marks added.
A collision reconstruction team remained at the scene as of 8 p.m. Friday.
Cpl. Marks warned kids to be aware of where the crosswalks are and to stop, look both ways and make sure there’s nothing coming.
“For the motorists, be vigilant in a school zone area that these kids will make the foolish decision to run across the street where they shouldn’t be.”
