Ranger issues North Shore cougar warning

Look big, don't run, park visitors told

Park rangers in North Vancouver are warning residents to keep their eyes and ears open after several cougar sightings in Lynn Headwaters and Lynn Canyon parks.

One or more animals were sighted near Dempsey Road and Underwood Avenue, and behind the ecology centre in Lynn Canyon.

Andy Robinson, senior park ranger for the District of North Vancouver, said cougars are more likely to attack small children and pets than adults, but that a startled cougar could be a danger to anyone.

People who run in the parks should leave their iPods at home so they can be aware of their surroundings, Robinson said. Pets should be kept on leashes, or pet owners should have a leash with them at all times.

If you encounter a cougar, don't kneel or squat but try to appear as big as possible and make a lot of noise, Robinson said. If it approaches you, throw sticks or rocks. "The main thing is to make yourself big and to keep your eye on the cougar," he said. "Never turn your back on [it]."

If you have a child with you, it's best to draw it in close.

If you spot a cougar, Robinson said the B.C. Conservation Officer Service should be called immediately at 1-877-952-7277.
