New Democrat M.L.A. Jagrup Brar has spent the first half of January living in a suite in Surrey's Newton neighbourhood with eight other welfare recipients.

Today he is moving his few belongings to Vancouver's downtown eastside.

Challenged by the anti-poverty agency Raise the Rates, the Surrey-Fleetwood M.L.A. is attempting to survive for the entire month on the current individual welfare payment of $610.10.

Brar hopes his campaign will draw attention to the low welfare rates in B.C.

Tuesday morning he is packing up and leaving for a single room occupancy hotel near Main and Hastings in Vancouver, where he will remain for the next two weeks.

Having spent the majority of his money on rent, Brar believes he will be broke before month's end.
