Search for California fugitive Ryan Jenkins continues

U.S. police are searching for a Canadian reality show contestant in the death of a swimsuit model whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase in a California dumpster. Police in Buena Park, southeast of Los Angeles, say Ryan Alexander Jenkins -- who appeared on the VH1 reality show Megan Wants a Millionaire -- is a “person of interest” in the homicide Jasmine Fiore, 28, an L.A.-area swimsuit model. Jenkins’ former boss at a Calgary real estate company -- who did not want his name or his company’s name published -- said Jenkins was a licensed realtor who sold condos and left months ago to move to the United States.

The international manhunt for Ryan Jenkins, the Calgary man wanted in the killing of his swimsuit model ex-wife Jasmine Fiore, continues Saturday as police determined a man that was taken into custody at Toronto airport late Friday night is not the fugitive reality-TV actor.

Peel Regional Police Staff Sgt. Keith Brodie told Canwest News Service that a man onboard Air Canada flight 152 from Vancouver was detained at Toronto's Pearson International Airport at about 11:30 p.m.

Brodie said at the time that the man was detained for an investigation, but did not immediately confirm his identity. "We're trying to positively identify this individual that we have . . . for a criminal investigation at this point in time," he said at the time.

Fellow passengers told Global News that when 10 armed police officers came onboard after the plane landed, the man was not resistant when he was arrested. "When police asked him if he was (Jenkins) . . . he actually smiled, and said, 'Yes, that's who I am,'" a passenger told Global News. "They put him in handcuffs and walked him out."

But an investigation, through fingerprint identification and working with the RCMP, led police to conclude that the man detained was not Jenkins, Brodie said. The man, who Brodie described as "quite willing to co-operate with the investigation," was released from police custody about two hours later.

Jenkins, 32, a reality-TV contestant from Calgary, has been charged with murder in the slaying of Fiore.

The 28-year-old model's mutilated body was found stuffed into a suitcase and dumped in a trash bin Aug. 15 in Buena Park, Calif., about 30 kilometres southeast of Los Angeles.

On Friday, it was revealed Fiore was identified when coroner's officials traced the serial number on her breast implants.

Farrah Emami of the Orange County, Calif., district attorney's office said Fiore's killer tried to prevent authorities from identifying her through fingerprints or dental records by removing her fingers and teeth.

The brutality of the crime shows how dangerous the killer is, she added.

"Consider how much time it would take to pull out every tooth one by one," she said.

The coroner's report verifies Fiore died of strangulation, Emami said.

Law enforcement sources also said Friday Jenkins led authorities on a high-speed boat chase along the U.S.-Canada border.

Authorities tracked Jenkins to a marina in Blaine, Wash., Wednesday and found his car and empty boat trailer.

Several miles off the coast, a U.S. Coast Guard cutter came upon a speedboat believed to be the suspect's. Emami confirmed that a high-speed chase ensued.

She said the cutter couldn't catch the speedboat. She could not confirm a report that it crossed into Canadian waters and was chased back by Canadian authorities.

Emami said the boat, registered to Jenkins, was found Thursday in Point Roberts, Wash., a few minutes' walk from the Canadian border. Jenkins is believed to have crossed on foot into Canada.

RCMP have taken over the lead in the hunt for the accused killer.

Paperwork paving the way for Jenkins' extradition is now in place.

Officials with the Orange County district attorney filed paperwork, and a Canada-wide warrant was issued Friday afternoon for Jenkins' arrest.

Authorities on both sides of the border were working to track down the former real-estate developer who, police say, was the last person to see 28-year-old Jasmine Fiore alive.

The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to Jenkins' arrest.

Meanwhile, court documents obtained by the Calgary Herald paint a two-sided portrait of Jenkins's personality — a trustworthy and easygoing person who was also a "sex addict" prone to temper tantrums.

Details of Jenkins' relationships emerged from two ex-girlfriends interviewed for a pre-sentencing report dealing with an assault against one of the women.

Jenkins admitted he punched the woman in the head and knocked her to her knees when she attempted to leave his Calgary residence.

Prior to sentencing, the victim of the assault told a probation officer that it was not out of character for Jenkins to "have temper tantrums" when he did not get his way, "especially when it came to sex."

Recently, Jenkins had been appearing on a reality-TV show called Megan Wants a Millionaire, in which he was competing against other men for the affections of the show's female star. The VH1 channel has stopped airing the program in the wake of the killing.
